Sushi Ya Food Review!

Sushi Ya is a sushi restaurant in Eugene, Oregon offering interesting sushi and a great happy hour selection (including 1$ sake shots). This place can be very hit or sometimes they can miss the mark a little bit. It does close pretty early at 9:30pm, which stinks because it use to be open until 11pm but that is Eugene for you! Everywhere is closed by 10pm it seems for food. Their sushi batter is also very yellow which was cool and interesting to me because I had never seen that before. I think it’s due to the use of turmeric in the batter that changes its color. They also got rid of the tempura ice cream which I was a massive fan of. They only have mochi ice cream now for dessert. We ordered a calamari to start for an appetizer and then we only got sushi. We got a California roll, two Tokyo rolls which had tempura shrimp, spicy mayo, I think hosin, spicy krab salad, cucumber, avocado and was tempura fried. They were really good just massive and the calamari was pretty good. They had a nice little side salad with the calamari and the batter wasn’t all the way on but still tasted good. The California roll was nothing to write home about, but dipped in the spicy mayo it was delicious. All of their rolls are pretty large and they all come in groups of six which is traditional. Some places like to offer it in groups of four to eight but I think six is the perfect in between spot. Lastly, we got two tempura shrimp rolls with the same sauce and they were also huge but delicious. The rolls themselves were also tempura fried which is my favourite way to fry something because it’s not too heavy and helps the roll add some crunch. If I had to rank the dishes, it would be Tokyo first, tempura shrimp roll second, calamari third, then California roll last. They are pretty pricey but not super expensive like some of the other sushi spots in Eugene. It’s also right next to the Saturday Market and the Hult Center downtown and is pretty easy to find. They don’t have a parking lot so you will have to use street parking or the parking garage right next to it. Overall, it wasn’t too bad! I’d give it a three and a half stars out of five. Price could go down a little bit and just some more fínese and ambiance would help this place a lot.
